Shotokan Karate: A style of Karate originating in Okinawa from a man named Gichin Funakoshi. This type of karate is usually divided into three parts: Kihon (basics), Kata(forms and patterns of moves) and Kumite (sparring). The techniques in Kihon and Kata are characterized by deep, long stances that provide stability, enable powerful movements and strengthen the body. Funakoshi is credited with being the first man to introduce Karate to Japan proper, when he gave exhibitions in 1917 and again in 1922 at physical education expositions sponsored by the Ministry of Education. The art soon caught on in Japan, and Funakoshi traveled throughout the country giving lectures and demonstration. The main universities invited him to help them set up Karate teams, and hundreds of people studied the art under his guidance. In 1956, Master Funakoshi, the Father of Modern Karate, passed away at the advanced age of 88, leaving thousands of students to carry on his spirit in Karate. Funakoshi was also a calligrapher and poet under the pen name of “Shoto”, meaning, “pine trees in the sand/waving pines”. This style of Karate then became known as “Shotokan Style – Japanese Karate”. Shotokan means followers of Shoto.

Yamanni-Chinen-Ryu Weapons: Yamanni Ryu is a form of Okinawan KoBudo who’s main weapon is the Bo, a non-tampered, cylindrical staff. The smaller Buki, such as sai, Tonfa, nunchaku and Kama are studied as secondary weapons. Yamanni Ryu has been described in the past as an “unknown style” whereas it is in fact more correctly a hidden style. As it is technically very demanding, its membership has never numbered more than a handful of senior teachers. It is however much respected in Okinawa and considered the root from which much of modern Bo Jitsu springs. Yamani-ryu is not just a collection of techniques. It is a style of weaponry with a fully developed kata system. Yamani-ryu kata are closer to real fighting than most modern kata. This is because Karate changed as it was popularized and became a sport, but Kobudo was not changed. Its kata remain much as they were in the old days.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu : “ The Gentle Art,” can be traced back to India where it was practiced by Buddhist Monks. Jiu Jitsu spread across the Far East then finally arriving in Japan where it developed and gained further

Popularity. Esai Maeda Koma, also known as, “Conde Koma,” was a Jiu Jitsu master who immigrated to Brazil and there found Carlos Gracie, a frail fifteen year old. After ten years of training, Carlos Gracie opened the first school known as the, “ Academia Gracie de Jiu Jitsu.” In 1925 Carlos shared his knowledge with his brothers, adapting and refining the naturally weaker characteristics of his family.

Kickboxing: Kickboxing began as a combination of boxing techniques as well as the kicking moves that are used in several different Martial Arts such as Karate, Kung Fu and Tae Kwan Do. Kickboxing techniques require timing and help build your balance and coordination, as all four limbs are being used. These moves develop a student’s core conditioning and provide a real, “full body,” workout. Our Kickboxing program will burn approximately 860 calories per session.
